Astilbe 'Sprite'
[Dwarf Astilbe]
Size (ships bareroot) - Gal. $9.50
Height Light
12 - 18 in. Partial Sun Mid Summer Pink 4 - 9

Lovely shell-pink flowers in open, drooping panicles borne on stiff, wiry stems. Rust-colored seed heads are particularly outstanding. Blooms in mid to late summer. Glossy black-green leaves are bronze in spring, finely textured and forms a dense mound. Slower to establish than other astilbes requiring about 3 years to reach maturity.

Care: All astilbe require consistently moist soil rich in organic matter. Light shade or filtered sun is best - more shade will reduce the amount of blooms and sun tends to be hard on both the color and the plant. Moisture is critical especially during blooms - drought stricken plants have a tough time rebounding. Dividing the plants in the spring every 4 years or so will keep them vigorous. Wait to cut back the old foliage until spring; it will help protect the plant from winter damage. In the spring, if the crown has risen above soil level, gently press it back into the ground and apply some organic matter around the plant.
