Deep, red, dense, pyramidal shape. Foliage clear green with a course texture. Astilbe's brightly colored stately plumes are absolutely spectacular when planted in mass and are one of the most colorful flowers for shade. Foliage tends to remain attractive all season and if left in place adds interest to the winter garden.
Care: All astilbe require consistently moist soil rich in organic matter. Light shade or filtered sun is best - more shade will reduce the amount of blooms and sun tends to be hard on both the color and the plant. Moisture is critical especially during blooms - drought stricken plants have a tough time rebounding. Dividing the plants in the spring every 4 years or so will keep them vigorous. Wait to cut back the old foliage until spring; it will help protect the plant from winter damage. In the spring, if the crown has risen above soil level, gently press it back into the ground and apply some organic matter around the plant.
